Petroscope 4D helps to classify tunnel debris

The first samples consisting of tunnel excavation material from the Koralm Tunnel project are being analysed. The Spectral Analysis function of the Petroscope 4D device is used to monitor colour and colour textures of the particles. An elaborated statistical prediction model based on these reflectance spectra is then used to classify the samples in terms of rock type. The test operation aims at an optimization of the recycling process for the tunnel debris. A large share of the excavated material is re-used as concrete aggregate for the production of the per-cast inner lining segments.

ÖBB Bau AG, who run this tunnel project, which is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure project, has commissioned this research project at TU Graz and Petromodel ehf.
